What to expect during Physical Therapy after a Total Knee Replacement (TKA).

Our Physical Therapists are ready to assist you in your rehabilitation after a TKA.

First Visit:

Your first visit with the Physical Therapist (PT) will be approximately two to three days after surgery. You will need a driver to bring you to and from the appointment. This first visit will last approximately one hour. You will receive help with any dressing change and adjustment needed to your walker or crutches. The PT will work on gentle range of motion to improve the bending (flexion) and straightening (extension) of your knee. This will help with pain control and swelling. Often, patients need assistance and education regarding how to walk without limping. This can be a difficult task for some patients. You will receive instruction on the correct exercises to do at home. You may already be practicing these, but some fine-tuning will be helpful. The session will usually end with elevation and icing of your surgical leg while any further questions you may have will be answered. A review of how to keep swelling down (example: ice, elevation, relative rest) will be completed.

Future Sessions:

In future sessions, the PT will progress your exercises based on your activity tolerance and goals. Usually these exercises consist of balance, leg strength, total body endurance tasks and body awareness/biomechanics education. These sessions are approximately 45 minutes.

When will it end?

After a TKA, you can expect approximately six to 10 weeks of Physical Therapy visits, usually two to three times per week. Our practice offers a North Lincoln location as well as a South Lincoln location for your convenience.
